Canada Immigration Application Processing Update
IRCC finalized 2,011,375 applications between January 1 and June 30, 2026, including 362,410 applications in June alone. At the end of June, IRCC had 1,539,785 applications awaiting finalization. Application inventories can change as new applications are received and existing applications are finalized.

Permanent Residence Applications
As of June 30, IRCC had 712,795 permanent residence applications awaiting finalization. These applications are divided into three major categories: economic immigration, family immigration, and protection.
Economic Immigration
The economic category had 249,555 applicationsawaiting processing at the end of June.
Of these:
- 77% were in processing.
- 23% were waiting for space under annual immigration targets.
- IRCC finalized 141,105 economic immigration applications between January and June.
- 30,105 economic applications were finalized in June.
Economic immigration includes pathways such as Express Entry, the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), federal business programs, the Atlantic Immigration Program, and other economic programs. The availability of spaces under Canada’s immigration levels targets can affect how quickly applications move forward. When there is insufficient space under the applicable target, some applications may have to wait until space becomes available.
Family Immigration Applications
IRCC reported 163,780 family-category applications awaiting finalization at the end of June. Of these applications:
- 59% were in processing.
- 41% were waiting for space.
- The inventory increased by 4,015 applications compared with May.
- IRCC finalized 54,520 family applications during the first six months of 2026.
- 8,620 family applications were finalized in June.
The family category includes the reunification of spouses, partners and children, the Parents and Grandparents Program, and international adoptions.
Protection Applications
The protection category had 299,460 applications awaiting finalization as of June 30. IRCC reported:
- 55% were in processing.
- 45% were waiting for space.
- The inventory increased by 7,755 applications from the previous month.
- 55,295 protection applications were finalized between January and June.
- 12,495 applications were finalized in June.
This category includes permanent residence applications involving protected persons in Canada, government-assisted refugees, privately sponsored refugees, and humanitarian and compassionate grounds.
Temporary Residence Applications
IRCC had 401,280 temporary residence applications awaiting finalization at the end of June. This category includes visitor visas, study permits, and work permits.
Work Permits
There were 27,655 work permit applications awaiting finalization at the end of June.
This represented a decrease of 7,385 applications compared with the previous month. IRCC finalized 161,325 work permit applications during the first half of 2026, including 20,550 in June.
Study Permits
The number of study permit applications awaiting a final decision increased to 36,520 by June 30. This was an increase of 4,855 applications compared with May. IRCC finalized 99,075 study permit applications during the first six months of 2026, with 24,705 finalized in June. Study permit application volumes can fluctuate during the year because many international students begin their studies during major intake periods.
Visitor Visas
Visitor visa applications represented the largest portion of IRCC’s temporary residence inventory. At the end of June, 337,100 visitor visa applications were awaiting a final decision.
This was a decrease of 265 applications compared with the end of May. IRCC finalized 1,306,055 visitor visa applications during the first half of 2026, including 232,300 in June.
Citizenship Applications
IRCC reported 425,710 citizenship applications awaiting finalization as of June 30. The citizenship inventory consists primarily of citizenship grant applications and proof of citizenship applications.
Citizenship Grants
There were approximately 326,365 citizenship grant applications awaiting finalization at the end of June. IRCC processed 162,020 citizenship grants between January and June 2026.
Proof of Citizenship
There were 99,520 proof of citizenship applications awaiting finalization.
IRCC issued 31,980 proof of citizenship certificates during the first six months of 2026.
Why Are Some Applications Waiting for Future Processing?
IRCC distinguishes between applications that are actively being processed and applications that are waiting for available space under Canada’s annual immigration targets. When the number of applications received for a program exceeds the available spaces under the Immigration Levels Plan, some applications may need to wait until space becomes available in a future year.
