Canada Invites 3,500 Tradespeople to Apply for Permanent Residence Through Express Entry

Canada Express Entry trades draw October 2026
Canada has invited 3,500 candidates with qualifying experience in trades occupations to apply for permanent residence through its Express Entry system.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) held the category-based selection round on October 1, 2026. The minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score was 476, and candidates also had to meet the work experience requirements for the trades category.

The draw offered another opportunity for eligible trades professionals to pursue Canadian permanent residence through a federal immigration selection process. However, receiving an invitation does not guarantee approval; invited candidates must submit a complete application and satisfy all applicable requirements.

Round 447

Candidates needed a CRS score of at least 476 and had to meet the applicable trades-category work experience criteria. For candidates with a score of exactly 476, the tie-breaking rule required that their Express Entry profile had been submitted by the specified date and time.

The tie-breaking rule is used when multiple candidates share the lowest CRS score invited. It does not mean that every candidate with a score of 476 automatically received an invitation.

How significant is this trades draw?

The October 1 round was the second Express Entry draw specifically targeting trades occupations in 2026.

Compared with the April draw, the October round issued 500 more invitations and had a CRS cut-off one point lower. These results demonstrate that category-based selection can provide opportunities for eligible candidates whose occupations fall within a targeted category. However, past draw results should not be treated as a prediction or guarantee of future invitations.

IRCC determines the number of invitations and the eligibility requirements for each round. The CRS cut-off can vary depending on the candidates in the pool, the draw category and the number of invitations issued.

What is Express Entry's trades category?
Express Entry is Canada’s application management system for several economic immigration pathways. It ranks eligible candidates using the Comprehensive Ranking System and invites selected candidates to apply for permanent residence.

Category-based selection allows IRCC to invite candidates who meet specified criteria connected to Canada’s economic or labour-market priorities. For trades draws, candidates must satisfy the applicable work experience requirements in addition to meeting the conditions for the relevant Express Entry pathway.

Having a job title that sounds like a skilled trade is not sufficient by itself. Applicants should verify that their actual work duties, occupational classification and work experience meet the official criteria in effect for the relevant draw. Official information is available through the Government of Canada’s Express Entry rounds of invitations page.

Who may benefit from a trades-category draw?

A trades-category draw may be relevant to people with qualifying work experience in occupations included in the applicable category. Potential candidates should assess the following factors:

  • Work experience: Confirm that the duration and type of experience meet the category’s requirements.
  • Occupational classification: Check the relevant National Occupational Classification (NOC) code and ensure the actual job duties correspond to the occupation.
  • Express Entry eligibility: Determine whether they qualify for an immigration program managed through Express Entry.
  • Language proficiency: Meet the applicable language testing and minimum proficiency requirements for their immigration program.
  • CRS score: Calculate their score using the official criteria and review how they rank in the pool.
  • Supporting evidence: Ensure that employment letters and other records can substantiate the claimed work experience.

Eligibility requirements can differ depending on the immigration program and the applicable category-based selection instructions. Candidates should rely on official IRCC criteria rather than assuming that all trades occupations qualify.

What should invited candidates do next?

Candidates who receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) should carefully review the instructions in their IRCC account and prepare their permanent residence application.

The usual next steps include:

  1. Review the ITA: Confirm the invitation details, applicable program and deadline.
  2. Check the information in your profile: Ensure that your work history, personal details and other declarations are accurate.
  3. Collect employment evidence: Prepare reference letters and supporting documents that establish the nature and duration of your qualifying work experience.
  4. Prepare other required documents: Depending on your circumstances, these may include language test results, educational documents, police certificates, medical examination information and proof of funds where required.
  5. Submit a complete application: Follow IRCC’s instructions and submit all required forms, documents and fees within the deadline stated in the invitation.

Express Entry candidates generally have 60 days after receiving an ITA to submit their permanent residence application. Candidates should check their individual invitation and current IRCC instructions to confirm the applicable deadline.

Applicants must provide truthful and consistent information. If their circumstances have changed since creating their Express Entry profile, they should check how those changes affect their eligibility and application.

Can trades professionals apply for a Bridging Open Work Permit?
Some foreign nationals already in Canada may qualify for a Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP) after submitting an eligible permanent residence application.

A BOWP may allow an eligible applicant to continue working while IRCC processes their permanent residence application. Eligibility depends on specific conditions, including the applicant’s current status and the stage and type of their permanent residence application.

Receiving an ITA alone does not automatically make someone eligible for a BOWP. Applicants should review the official Bridging Open Work Permit requirements before applying.

What if your CRS score is below 476?
Candidates who were not invited in this round may remain in the Express Entry pool if they continue to meet the applicable requirements. They can also review whether there are legitimate ways to improve their ranking or explore other immigration pathways.

Depending on their circumstances, possible options may include:

  • Improving English or French language test results.
  • Obtaining additional eligible education or an Educational Credential Assessment where applicable.
  • Gaining further qualifying work experience.
  • Reviewing eligibility for a provincial nomination pathway.
  • Assessing other federal or provincial immigration programs that may suit their background.

A provincial nomination through an eligible Express Entry-linked pathway can significantly increase a candidate’s CRS score. However, provincial programs have separate criteria and selection processes, and a nomination is not guaranteed.

Candidates should not make major immigration or employment decisions based solely on one draw’s cut-off. Future rounds may have different criteria, invitation numbers and CRS thresholds.
