Care Initiative: Healthcare, Education, Childcare and Veterinary Occupations
Under the care objective, British Columbia is prioritizing skilled workers in 36 occupations across healthcare, education, childcare and veterinary care. Eligible occupations include:
- Registered nurses and registered psychiatric nurses.
- Licensed practical nurses.
- Nurse practitioners.
- General practitioners and family physicians.
- Dentists.
- Pharmacists.
- Physiotherapists.
- Occupational therapists.
- Psychologists.
- Social workers.
- Medical laboratory technologists.
- Medical radiation technologists.
- Medical sonographers.
- Respiratory therapists.
- Paramedical occupations.
- Early childhood educators.
- Veterinary professionals.
- Other specified healthcare and education occupations.
The full list also includes several specialized medical, dental and therapy occupations.
Candidates seeking a targeted invitation under the care initiative must generally have a current full-time job or job offer in an eligible occupation. Work experience and other requirements can vary depending on the occupation and immigration stream.
Special Requirements for Certain Occupations
Some occupations have additional requirements. For example, French-speaking elementary/kindergarten and secondary school teachers must be employed in British Columbia’s K-12 education system and have at least CLB 5 in French.
Nurse aides, orderlies and patient service associates must be registered with the BC Care Aide & Community Health Worker Registry to receive targeted invitations under the applicable care initiative. British Columbia has invited at least 946 candidates working in occupations designated under the care objective during 2026, according to the province’s reported figures.
Build Initiative: Construction Trades
The build objective focuses on construction workers who can help address skilled-trades demand in British Columbia. The province is prioritizing the following construction occupations:

Candidates targeted under the build initiative must generally have a current job or job offer in an eligible construction occupation. They must also have at least two years of full-time equivalent work experience to be considered. British Columbia had invited 572 construction-trades professionals under the build initiative during 2026 at the time of the announcement.
Innovate Initiative: High-Earning and High-Scoring Candidates
The third objective, innovate, focuses on candidates who can make a significant economic contribution to British Columbia. This objective covers both skilled workers and entrepreneurs across sectors and occupations. The BCPNP periodically conducts High Economic Impact invitation rounds using criteria such as:
- Wage or salary combined with a TEER 0–3 job offer.
- Registration score.
In a July 16 selection round, candidates needed either a wage of approximately $58 per hour, equivalent to about $115,000 annually, or a registration score of at least 132. The province had issued 2,658 High Economic Impact invitations under the innovate objective in 2026 at the time of the CIC News report.
Recent BCPNP Invitation Rounds
British Columbia continues to conduct targeted invitation rounds based on its provincial priorities. For example, on August 20, 2026, the BCPNP invited candidates through its Innovate: High Economic Impact category. The province issued 337 invitations to candidates meeting a minimum wage of $55 per hour and $110,000 per year with a NOC TEER 0, 1, 2 or 3 job offer, along with another 265 invitations based on a minimum registration score of 132.
The BCPNP also conducted targeted selections for childcare, healthcare, veterinary care and construction trades earlier in August. This demonstrates that the province is continuing to use targeted selection rather than relying solely on broad, general draws.
How to Obtain Permanent Residence Through the BCPNP
Foreign nationals seeking permanent residence through the BCPNP generally need to complete several stages. The process includes:
- Meet the eligibility requirements of an applicable BCPNP stream.
- Create and submit a registration through the BCPNP Online User Portal.
- Receive an invitation to apply for provincial nomination.
- Submit a complete provincial nomination application within the applicable deadline.
- Receive a provincial nomination.
- Submit an application for Canadian permanent residence to the federal government.
For Skills Immigration candidates, the province generally provides 30 days to submit a complete application after receiving an invitation. Entrepreneur applicants generally have 120 days. A provincial nomination does not itself grant Canadian permanent residence. The federal government must still assess the permanent residence application.
British Columbia Plans to Use Its Full Allocation
As of August 6, 2026, British Columbia had issued at least 4,324 invitations to apply for provincial nomination during the year. The province has stated that it intends to use its full 6,254-nomination allocation by the end of 2026.
British Columbia also expects at least 35% of its nominations to go to candidates working in communities outside Metro Vancouver. This regional focus is intended to help address labour-market needs across the province rather than concentrating nominations exclusively in the Vancouver metropolitan area.
Temporary Rural/Remote Health Support Initiative
British Columbia has also introduced a separate Temporary Rural/Remote Health Support Initiative (TRHSI). The initiative targets eligible workers with a full-time job offer from a B.C. health authority in a rural or remote area. Eligible occupations include:
- Janitors, caretakers and heavy-duty cleaners.
- Light-duty cleaners.
- Security guards and related security service occupations.
The province originally intended to nominate up to 250 eligible workers through this pathway. The registration deadline was extended in August 2026, with registrations now accepted until October 7, 2026, at 11:59 p.m.
