Canada Releases Latest IRCC Processing Time Update
The latest update, released on July 2, 2026, indicates that processing times for in-Canada work permit applications have continued to improve. However, wait times increased for some study permit and Super Visa applicants, while visitor visa processing times varied depending on the applicant’s country of residence.
Work Permit Processing Times Continue to Improve
The biggest improvement in the latest IRCC update is for applicants applying for work permits from within Canada. Processing times for in-Canada work permit applications decreased from 144 days to 129 days, representing a 15-day improvement and the lowest processing time recorded so far in 2026. Nigeria-based applicants also benefited from faster processing, with wait times dropping from 9 weeks to 8 weeks.
Processing times remained unchanged for applicants applying from:
- India – 9 weeks
- Pakistan – 5 weeks
- United States – 4 weeks
- Philippines – 8 weeks
These improvements are welcome news for temporary foreign workers and Canadian employers facing labour shortages.
Study Permit Processing Times Increase for Some Applicants
Unlike work permits, study permit processing times increased for certain applicants. IRCC reported a one-week increase for study permit applications submitted:
- From within Canada (6 weeks to 7 weeks)
- From India (4 weeks to 5 weeks)
Processing times remained unchanged for applicants applying from:
- Pakistan – 6 weeks
- Nigeria – 5 weeks
- United States – 5 weeks
- Philippines – 4 weeks
Prospective international students should continue submitting complete applications as early as possible before their intended program start date.
Visitor Visa Processing Times Show Mixed Results
Visitor visa processing times improved for applicants from several countries, while others experienced slightly longer waits.
Latest processing times include:
- Canada: 38 days (previously 42 days)
- India: 21 days (previously 22 days)
- Pakistan: 38 days (previously 43 days)
Meanwhile, processing times increased slightly for:
- Nigeria: 56 days (previously 54 days)
- United States: 32 days (previously 31 days)
Processing times for applicants from the Philippines remained unchanged at 17 days.
Super Visa Processing Times Vary by Country
The latest update also brought significant changes to Super Visa processing times. The largest improvement was recorded for applicants from India, where processing times fell from 66 days to 50 days, reducing waiting periods by just over two weeks.
Other changes include:
- Pakistan: 95 days to 102 days
- Nigeria: 34 days to 32 days
- United States: 104 days to 123 days
- Philippines: 42 days to 52 days
Since Super Visa applications can only be submitted from outside Canada, these processing times apply to overseas applicants only.
Processing Times vs. Service Standards
IRCC processing times are estimates designed to help applicants understand how long it may take for an application to be processed. These estimates are updated regularly based on application volumes and departmental capacity. Service standards are different. They represent IRCC’s internal goal for processing approximately 80% of applications within a specific timeframe under normal operating conditions. Actual processing times may vary depending on application complexity, document verification, background checks, and overall application volumes.
What This Means for Temporary Residence Applicants
The latest IRCC update reflects continued progress in reducing work permit processing times, particularly for applicants already in Canada.
However, applicants seeking study permits, visitor visas, or Super Visas should continue monitoring the latest processing times, as timelines can change frequently depending on application volumes and operational priorities. Submitting a complete application with all required supporting documents remains one of the best ways to help avoid unnecessary delays.
